Negative result
The English probate courts and Norfolk parish/marriage indexes, searched for any record naming the emigrant, his father Francis, or his family, return no positive match. No Francis Gurney G14 will survives in the Commissary, Archdeaconry, Prerogative, or Norwich courts; the two Rattlesden Rivett wills name no Margaret and no Gurney; and the Norfolk parish and same-name indexes yield no John-son-of-Francis baptism and no matching household for John or his wife Mary.
Search scope
- Searched: composite — Commissary/Archdeaconry/PCC/Norwich probate indexes + FMP & FS Norfolk parish/baptism indexes
- Coverage window: 1600 to 1660
- Search: Gurney/Gurnay/Gurn* and Rivett variants for the emigrant John, his father Francis's will, Margaret's Rivett parentage, and John's and Mary's family
- Limitations: Index-level for the parish and marriage searches; some register images unread; Francis G14 and the Rivett family are canonically treated on their own subject files; the bearing here is search coverage, not the positive parentage argument
Qualifications and conflicts
- Qualifies Open question Open question: John's English origin and parentage unidentifiedThe probate and parish-index negatives bear directly on the unresolved origin-and-parentage question: they searched for the emigrant, father Francis, and family without producing the record that would close the question.
- Qualifies Open question Open question: first wife Mary's identity and English marriageThe Norfolk parish and marriage negative bears directly on the first-wife question by finding no matching John Gurney and Mary marriage or household in the searched English collections.
- Qualifies Analysis What the identification rests on, and the four offsets that hold it below certaintyThe probate and parish negatives sharpen both sides of the Candidate B weighing: they do not supply the desired positive family record, while also documenting the record gap the current probability estimate must live with.
- Qualifies Analysis Two realistic end-states for the estimate and three levers that would move itThe completed probate and Norfolk-index negatives reduce the remaining value of further searching to the specific named levers rather than an open-ended expectation that ordinary indexed records will solve the case.
- Qualifies Negative result No indexed English parish cluster matches the colonial John's full family signatureThe broader probate, parish, and marriage negatives corroborate the no-family-signature finding while keeping it framed as an indexed/surviving-record gap rather than evidence the family was outside England.
