Evidence

Entry E, East Dereham image 00715: "John the sonne of ffrancis Gurnie," c.1609/10

Entry E of the East Dereham register, on image 00715, was indexed by Findmypast and FreeREG as "John the sonne of Nicholas Gorne." Read under magnification against four confirmed "ffrancis Gurnie/Gurny" entries in the same register and the same hand, it reads instead as "John the sonne of ffrancis Gurnie," about 1609/10. Four independent letterform tests — the initial stroke cluster, the mid-body structure, the word segmentation, and the terminal formation — favour "ffrancis"; none favours "Nicholas."

Confidence: Moderate

Date: c.1609/10 (±2 years)
