Finding

John's tailoring learned off the enrolled books (informal/country training)

Both surviving formal trade-transmission pathways being blank, John Gurney's tailoring was most plausibly acquired by informal or country training that generated no enrolled indenture or livery freedom - an artisan formation consistent with an East Anglian market-town or country craft upbringing but leaving his specific master, place, and route of training unrecorded. The reading narrows rather than proves: many competent tradesmen never enrolled an indenture or took up a company freedom, so the negatives bound the record of his training, not the fact that he was trained; his trade remains one of the sharpest un-exploited handles on his English origin.
