Evidence

Parents' marriage: Francis Gurney x Margaret Rybett, 1611

Francis Gurney — the Norwich-and-London Merchant Taylor who is the probable father of John Gurney-1 in the identity work — married his first wife Margaret Rybett at St Martin at Palace, Norwich, on 23 September 1611 ('Franc Gurny & Margaret Rybett'). On the identity reading of John as this couple's eldest child, the marriage is a fourth chronological handle on John's birth window, and a point of friction: it sits later than the probable East Dereham baptism of about 1609/10, which would put John's birth a year or two before his parents married. The marriage record is not in doubt; the parentage identification behind its bearing is probable, not proven, and is held to the identity work.

Confidence: High

Date: 23 September 1611
